Our Story: Fostering Hope and Change
In October 2003, a visionary dream became reality as the late former South African President, Nelson Mandela, inaugurated the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre (NMCYC). Nestled in the heart of Chatsworth, a township teeming with nearly 500,000 souls, the NMCYC emerged as a bustling hub of empowerment, offering a sanctuary for the community’s youth.
Our journey of hope commenced with a heart-wrenching tragedy in Chatsworth in 2001. An incident during a ‘dance matinee’ at a local nightclub led to a stampede that claimed the lives of 13 children, some as young as 10 years old. The anguish and fervent plea from residents for a safe haven, a place where the youth could flourish without fear, tugged at our collective conscience. In response, Nelson Mandela, a beacon of compassion and empathy, rallied for the construction of the Youth Centre, reaching out for crucial funding to heal the community.
Fast forward to 2018, the Nelson Mandela Foundation bestowed upon the Chatsworth Youth Centre Trust a profound honor — the approval to rename the center as the “Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre.” This rechristening symbolizes the eternal legacy of a man who embodied the spirit of change and unity, extending his influence far beyond his lifetime.
Our story is one of resilience, transformation, and unwavering commitment to a brighter future. We are driven by the vision of instilling hope, nurturing leadership, and fostering change, honoring the memory of Nelson Mandela and the countless lives touched by his legacy. Through our SEO-rich narrative, we invite you to be part of this extraordinary journey, where every voice, every contribution, and every story has the power to inspire change and make a lasting impact on the world.
Empowering Youth with Enriching Activities and Classes
For nearly 15 years, the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre (NMCYC) has been a vibrant hub, offering a diverse range of programs that cater to the unique needs and interests of young people from various cultural backgrounds. At the heart of our center are dedicated community volunteers who generously share their skills and time, ensuring that all our programs are entirely free of charge.
Our commitment extends to partnering with over 200 primary and secondary schools, not only in Chatsworth but also in neighboring areas like Welbedact, Marianhill, Wentworth, Merebank, Lamontville, Umlazi, and Queensburgh.
We are deeply invested in addressing the prevalent challenges faced by today’s youth, including issues like substance abuse, crime, promiscuity, early school dropout, and unemployment. As part of our core mission, we spearhead advocacy and implementation of diverse programs that encompass sports, lifestyle, and skill development, as well as the establishment of clubs dedicated to driving impactful projects.
Our offerings span an extensive array of sports, from chess, karate, and table tennis to boxing, basketball, and more. We also conduct awareness programs to empower young minds to address pressing issues such as drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, constitutional awareness, justice system education, suicide prevention, and other relevant topics.
Our clubs are tailored to specific interests, focusing on areas like girl guides, health, environmental awareness, counseling, poetry, art, history, and educational support. We are committed to empowering out-of-school and unemployed youth through skill development programs that encompass computer skills, as well as building trades including plastering, bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
As part of our commitment to the youth, we organize an annual Careers Expo at the NMCYC, offering valuable guidance and opportunities to help young individuals embark on their professional journeys. Through these programs and classes, we aim to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation, providing them with the tools they need to succeed and make a positive impact in their communities.
